About Us
About Us:
The God, Guys, Guns, and Grub Society is a non-denominational Christian men’s ministry that was started by Donald E. Peacock, II in 2013 when he noticed a lack of men in the various leadership roles in his church. While there is nothing wrong with women in these roles, the obvious lack of men in these positions made it clear that we had abdicated our roles. We are a not-for-profit organization recognized by the State of Kansas, but we have not yet received the 501(c)3 status from the Federal Government.
Don felt it was necessary for men to step up and resume the role that God had given us in the Bible; as a leader in our home, in our local church, and in society. After talking with the pastor, who re-affirmed the necessity for the men to ‘step up’, Don decided that one way to get men to attend a men’s event was to offer them something that appealed to their maleness. Based on the availability of some property that the Peacock family owned in Oklahoma, it was decided that the event would be a weekend event, a retreat, on the property and the primary focus of the weekend would be various shooting activities. Of course, there had to be good food, in plentiful amounts, to keep the attendees happy and interested in returning to the retreat for future events. Thus, all meals are provided during the retreat. Of course, dietary restrictions may prevent us from providing the food for everyone, but those that have such dietary needs are encouraged to bring their own food and use our equipment to prepare it.
The retreat has changed times on the calendar over the years, originally scheduled in the Spring of the year. However, due to the random and sometimes treacherous weather in the Spring, the decision was made to move it to September. It used to be the second weekend in September, not to conflict with the Labor Day Weekend. However, after three (3) years in a row where the temperatures were above 100oF for the entire weekend, it was decided to move it to the last weekend in September. As an avid hunter, Don also did not want to move it any later in the year to prevent conflicts with the upcoming hunting seasons.
Originally, the retreat was scheduled as a 2-day event, beginning on Friday evening and ending after the main presentation in the evening on Saturday. This is because the pastor didn’t want the men to miss the opportunity to be with their families in church on Sunday mornings. However, the Peacocks switched churches right before Covid-19 shut everything down. The after discussing the men’s retreat with the new pastor, he agreed with the idea but recommended expanding it to include another day, ending on Sunday. In his opinion, our families could be without the men for one Sunday since they were working to become better husbands, fathers, and leaders.
In addition to the change to the schedule, Don’s attendance at the new church left him feeling that he would be quickly overcome by the time-consuming activities of planning for such a large event. Thus, he recruited some members of the church to help him organize, plan, and execute the events. This has worked well to improve the experience for all. Multiple new events have been added due to the inputs from the planning team.
We have 3 different types of gun ranges available; shotgun, pistol, and rifle. We also have an archery range as well as a knife/hatchet throwing area. One of the recent additions is a water balloon launcher that is enjoyed by men of all ages.
Additionally, we strive to have value-added training for the attendees. We have held classes on ropemaking, knot tying, ammunition reloading, land navigation, campfire cooking, and blacksmithing. Anyone with a special skill is encouraged to offer their expertise to enlighten the rest of the group.
Since the purpose of the retreat was to encourage men to regain their God-given responsibilities and was never to make a profit, we have strived to keep the cost affordable, including a discount for early registration. In the rare event that someone cannot afford to pay the registration fee, often another member will offer a scholarship for them to attend. We also recognized the need to create a 1-day option for those men who actually do need to get back home to their jobs, family, and worship on Sunday. This is a lower-cost alternative as well.
While many of the attendees bring their own tents and various camping equipment, there is plenty of room for the men to bring a camper or RV. We have recently added a 20-bed bunkhouse that is available to those that don’t feel like sleeping on the ground. There are also areas for riding ATV’s.
There is no age requirement to attend the retreats. All attendees must sign a Liability Release Form and anyone under the age of 21 must be sponsored by an adult over the age of 21. Being a non-denominational organization, there is no requirement for anyone to profess a dedication to any particular church. In fact, recognizing the truth that many men have never / will never attend church, we use the retreat as an opportunity to witness to our lost family and friends. They will hear the truth about their need for salvation during the weekend.
We have published a webpage to inform the participants of the schedule of events, planned menu, and what items to bring/not bring. There is also a page dedicated to the recent past events so people can look forward to upcoming retreats. The registration form is also on the webpage, but anyone who has difficulty in accessing it can simply email Don to ask him for a copy.
As the main goal of the retreat is to train men to recognize and reclaim their Biblical responsibilities of manhood, we feature a discipleship session after each meal including a featured speaker after the dinner meal on Saturday evening. We also open each day with the Pledge of Allegiance and pray before each meal as well.
After the retreat is over, we spend some time cleaning up the area, tearing down the tents and canopies and ending with a prayer for everyone’s safe travels home. The goal is to have the area cleaned up and the gates locked by 1pm each Sunday.
If you have any questions after reading this, please reach out to Don and he will do his best to answer them.
In His service,
Don Peacock
